The first meeting of the “Scale Masters” in Woodland, California (10 km from the capital city of Sacramento) took place from 23.-25. September. Gonzalo Martinez, known through the Internet to many for his highly scaled Vario-Lama, organized this wonderful meeting. The proceeds from the event were donated to an autistic people’s charity. Visitors were entertained by many different flight demonstrations, including model helicopters, model jets, and full size helicopters.

Among the scale helicopter highlights were:
Nick Kolias with his Vario Hughes 500 turbine. The guy flies incredibly accurate and scale like.
Dan Lowry with his Vario Huey with turbine. This helicopter was a very accurate reproduction of the full size helicopter that also attended the event.
Gonzalo Martinez with his dream-Lama. Many other customers of Vario have followed his scale detailing. An exemplary model, compliments to Gonzalo!
Sandy Jeffe with his electric version of the MD 900 Explorer. Flew very well during the event.

People came from Germany, Hawaii, UK, Florida, Washington State and even from California! A friendly bunch of like-minded helicopter pilots had fun while taking in the good weather and beautiful scale models.

The event was attended by three full size helicopters: a JetRanger, a BO 105 rescue helicopter (which remained ready to respond to an emergency call), and, yes, this incredible Bell UH-1D, whose crew were Vietnam veterans. For these people, the Huey was the wartime life saver and reliable friend. The team is welded together by their experiences from the war and the Huey forms a strong connection with them. This Huey was fully restored to fly at charity events. The crew did us the favor of a very low fly by...very impressive. More information at HueyVets.com
